Perth Wing Chun: Vince and Dave Lacey (two high ranking Choy Lee Fut Kung Fu masters from Hong Kong) learned Wing Chun from Bruce Lee for one year in 1959, just prior to Bruce Lee leaving for America to pursue his acting career.
After this the Lacey brothers made their way from Hong Kong to Perth and that is when they decided to start Perth Wing Chun. The masters opened the first school in 1966 at the Barrack St Jetty and taught students Wing Chun using open hands and also with the wooden dummy.
The masters were notorious back in the day and won many street competitions and fights with their combination of Wing Chun and Choy Lay Fut (also known as Choy Li Fut) Kung Fu. Eventually they phased out the Wing Chun and taught only Choy Lay Fut, due to its popularity and effectiveness on the street.
It is around this time that Sifu George discovered Choy Lay Fut being taught by the Lacey brothers in 1976 and never looked back.
We now run two full time academies teaching Buk Sing Choy Lay Fut (also pronounced Choy Li Fut or Choy Lee Fut).
In fact, this style has become the most popular Kung Fu style in Northern China and has won more South East Asian tournaments than any other style.
Bruce Lee once quoted ” Choy Lay Fut is one of the most effective systems I have come across and one of the hardest systems to defend against.”
